Sweets Week Contest Winner

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest, and thanks for your great responses.  Some of my favorites were listed too.  This week, I tried many great sweets from shops listed in the book.  My favorite was the Birdbath chocolate chip cookie, and the Paris-Brest from La Bergamote came in a close second.

Sweets Week: Day 6: Birdbath Bakery

I think Birdbath Bakery has the best chocolate chip cookie in town.  It’s vegan, and the only thing I notice is that it’s a bit oily on the bottom.  But it definitely hits the spot when you get the craving for that American cookie staple.

Verdict:  If you like chocolate chip cookies, you have to try this one.

Sweets Week: Day 5: La Bergamote

La Bergamote is a French bistro and patisserie with locations in Chelsea and one hidden away down an unsuspecting side street of Tenth Avenue in Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen.  I’d like to come back here some time for brunch in the cafe.  The patisserie has cakes, croissants, tarts and more.  I got a Paris-Brest, the choux pastry filled with cream and topped with powdered sugar and almond slivers that was named for a bicycle race between the cities Paris and Brest.

Verdict:  The custardy-creamy hazelnut-flavored filling and fresh pastry make for a delicious dessert.

Sweets Week: Day 4: Little Pie Company

Little Pie Company has been in NYC since 1985.  I’ve been to it a few times through the years.  Their namesake, the little pie, takes center stage at this cute pie shop just off the Broadway beaten path.  I recently visited and got a pie of the month, the strawberry rhubarb, and a banana coconut cream pie.  It seems like a lot of bakeries are getting summery with their ingredients.  I guess it reflects the attitude I’m also feeling, bring on the warm weather!

The pies at Little Pie Company are classic American pies, from Southern pecan to key lime to old-fashioned apple to Mississippi mud.  If you’re looking for crazy hipster flavors, you won’t find that here, where tradition reigns supreme.  In addition to little pies, there are cakes, muffins, cookies and brownies.

Verdict:  The banana coconut cream pie has a perfectly flaky crust and creamy filling with plenty of chunks of real banana and real banana flavor with a generous heaping of cream topped with toasted coconut.  The strawberry rhubarb is equally good, with a sweet berry flavor and flaky crust.  Both pies are very good.

Sweets Week: Day 3: Amy’s Bread

Amy’s Bread is a popular bake shop with breads, cakes, cupcakes, cookies and muffins and scones with locations on Bleecker Street and in Chelsea Market and Hell’s Kitchen.  As soon as I walked into the bustling bakery, I saw the yellow cake with pink frosting and knew I had to have it.  I also love red velvet cake, so I ordered a slice of that too.

Verdict:  The cake layers are fresh, and the red velvet cake actually had a cocoa flavor, a nice surprise since so many red velvet cakes don’t have a cocoa taste.  The pink frosting on the yellow cake was a sweet buttercream.  For red velvet cake, I have to have cream cheese frosting.  When I tasted this red velvet cake, I knew it was a shortening-buttercream frosting, which is not a favorite of mine.  I later found out that it’s a Swiss meringue buttercream frosting.

Sweets Week: Day 2: Babycakes NYC

For those of you who follow a vegan lifestyle, Babycakes NYC is a godsend. The vegan bakery also caters to those with food allergies and dietary restrictions with baked goods that are refined-sugar–free, gluten-free, wheat-free, soy-free, dairy-free, egg-free or kosher.  I don’t have any particular dietary restriction, but I visited Babycakes NYC with a friend of mine who is vegan.  We tried a bunch of doughnuts and a red velvet cupcake.

Verdict:  My friend who is vegan loved these, especially the salted caramel doughnut.  I really love cream cheese frosting on my red velvet cupcake, so it didn’t appeal to me.  But I’m not the target customer.  I thought these were very good alternatives if you have a dietary restriction.

Sweets Week: Day 1: L.A. Burdick

First up, L.A. Burdick in Flatiron.  L.A. Burdick is a chocolate shop known for its fresh, European-style chocolates, especially cute chocolate mice and penguins.  L.A. Burdick also has a cafe where you can try a number of pastries and cakes along with a hot chocolate.  I got a chocolate coconut cake, mostly because I’m feeling coconut these days.

Verdict:  This cake is a coconut lover’s paradise.  From the large flakes of toasted coconut on top to the coconut cream to the chocolate cake with coconut in it, this cake is chock full of coconut–a cake version of a coconut macaroon.
