Government Shutdown and Our Food

How will the government shutdown affect our food supply?  Well, it looks like the USDA will still be doing meat and grain inspectionsDairy grading and poultry and egg inspections will still go on since they’re not funded by appropriations.  The same article mentions that country-of-origin labeling as well as some other functions that sound important are funded through appropriations and will stop.  The USDA website is down.  What’s more scary is the FDA shutdown.  The FDA will be able to handle emergencies for consumer protection like “high-risk recalls” and “critical public health issues.”  However, it’s stopping its “routine establishment inspections, some compliance and enforcement activities, monitoring of imports, notification programs (e.g., food contact substances, infant formula), and the majority of the laboratory research necessary to inform public health decision-making.”  Not monitoring imports?

My takeaway:  More than usual, it’s probably best to stick to buying local.
