Sweets Week: Day 4: Sugar and Plumm

Sugar and Plumm on the Upper West Side is one of those places that appeals to the kid in all of us.  It’s part retail candy store, part café, part patisserie but all fun.  There are a number of specialty crepes, milkshakes, sundaes and cakes, but on my visit, I opted to try a little of all of them.  I ordered the earthquake in a fishbowl.  Earthquake in a fishbowl is a sharable dessert that could also be called kitchen sink because it has everything in it–chocolate caramel cake; key lime pie; Brooklyn blackout cake; New York cheesecake; butterscotch pudding; vanilla, chocolate and dulce de leche ice cream and whipped cream.  I’m not sure the bowl is really a fishbowl, as it has a lid on it, but it looks like a large bowl used to store candy in a traditional candy store.

My favorite parts of the fishbowl were the cheesecake, the butterscotch pudding, and the key lime, but everything tasted good.  This dessert was fun and delish.  It’s great for kids, a family, or a romantic date.

Review & Giveaway of New York Sweets: A Sugarhound’s Guide to the Best Bakeries, Ice Cream Parlors, Candy Shops, and Other Emporia of Delicious Delights

NewYorkSweets_cover

New York Sweets: A Sugarhound’s Guide to the Best Bakeries, Ice Cream Parlors, Candy Shops, and Other Emporia of Delicious Delights by Susan Meisel, published by Rizzoli on April 2, 2013, is a comprehensive listing of all the places to get your sugar fix in NYC.  Whether you are an ice cream person, a bakery person or a candy person, there is something in this book for you.  Personally, I tend to lean toward ice cream and bakeries.  The book includes some of my faves:  Doughnut Plant, Jacques Torres, Payard, Villabate, L’arte Del Gelato, Sockerbit, Tea & Sympathy, Vosges, Ferrara and Van Leeuwen. This is one of those books I wish I had written!  The book is divided into neighborhoods, so you can do a sweets tour in each NYC ‘hood!  I want to try Puddin’ on St. Mark’s Place–a shop with puddings and toppings.  There’s plenty of eye candy in the hardcover book with color photos of goodies from all the shops listed and recipes for you to try at home.

If you are in New York and have never been, the Rizzoli Bookstore on 57th Street is worth a trip.  I love this store.  Rizzoli has wonderful art and photography books and a great international magazine section.

You can win a copy of this fun book by entering the giveaway.  If you win, Rizzoli will ship you a free copy of New York Sweets: A Sugarhound’s Guide to the Best Bakeries, Ice Cream Parlors, Candy Shops, and Other Emporia of Delicious Delights by Susan Meisel.

Cool Food Blog

Desserts with Benefits is a very cool food blog with the tagline “where decadence & health become one.”  Desserts that are good for you?  This is better than the fountain of youth.  Take a look at the pictures of desserts on this blog.  They don’t look like diet desserts.  The red velvet cake looks to die for!  It’s made with beets, almond milk, egg whites and oat and brown rice flours.  The frosting recipe is very creative, and I’d like to see how it tastes!  I think any of these desserts would satisfy a sweet tooth without the guilt.

Cool Food Blog

Just Desserts NYC is a very cool food blog by two former Rockettes who try the dessert offerings in the city and beyond.  Check out the new Rockette Red Velvet cupcake at Magnolia Bakery in honor of the Rockettes.  The site is brightly colored with great pics of yummy-looking desserts.  I like their road trip finds!
