NYC Restaurant Week: Firebird Russian

I scored dinner reservations at Dovetail for opening night of Restaurant Week; however, at some point, Dovetail was no longer offering the Restaurant Week menu at that time.  I changed plans to Firebird Russian Restaurant on Restaurant Row.  Firebird is classic New York, traditional with charming decor and friendly waitstaff.  For starters, I ordered POTATO PIEROGI Roasted Garlic and Dill Yogurt Sauce

and my friend got CHILLED TOMATO SOUP Yellow Tomato Puree, Red Tomato Consommé Red and Yellow Peppers, Jalapenos, Basil, Cilantro, Banyu’s Vinegar.  The pierogi were fried and very good.  The dill sauce was a great accompaniment.  The tomato soup was refreshing, a great summer dish.

We also ordered the house infused vodkas.  Mine was plum and my friend’s, cranberry.  Both were very good.  For entrees, I got ARMENIAN LAMB Spinach Borani and Basmati Rice

and my friend got SALMON KULEBIAKA Salmon Baked in Puff Pastry, Sorrel Spinach Sauce, Mushroom, Cabbage, Egg; Grilled Trevisano, Fennel Velouté Sauce.  Both dishes were good.  I especially liked the Armenian lamb.  The borani was deliciously creamy.  The flavors in this dish went together very well to replicate a good home cooked meal.

For dessert, we both ordered CHOCOLATE CAKE Flourless Cake, Raspberry, Caramel, and Chocolate Sauces, Cherry Compote.  Unfortunately, this cake didn’t match the other courses and was really not very good.  We would have done better with the sorbet, as the cake lacked a rich chocolate flavor and was quite boring.

In all, Firebird Russian Restaurant is a bit of old world New York with familiar dishes prepared well.
